October 2011 Recent Events This year's second showing of the Works in Progress New Dance Series took place on September 24th at the Free Flow Dance Centre. Our list of talented choreographers included Kyle Syverson of Saskatoon, Jaime Williams of Regina, and Ntara Curry of Wynyard. Free Flow Dance also presented an unfinished piece from the “Great Mystery Project”, later presented at The Refinery on October 21st and 22nd. Thank you to our audience, who's written feedback aids our performers in the completion of their work! Do the hustle! On September 24th, hip 70's fashion and music abounded at the Free Flow Dance Centre for Free Flow's annual fundraiser, Discomania. The night included a free hustle lesson and a dance competition with prizes! Raising money has never been so much fun. Free Flow Dance has continued teaching free dance workshops for Saskatoon's non-profit and community organizations, funded by the City of Saskatoon. Recent students include Camp Fyrefly, Saskatchewan Intercultural Association and Saskatoon Convalescent Home. The workshops have been a fantastic opportunity for Free Flow to get involved in the community and get people in Saskatoon excited about dancing! October 21st and 22nd marked the presentation of the much-anticipated “Great Mystery Project” at The Refinery. This collaboration between Free Flow Dance and Adrian Stimson produced a unique peek into the art, science and aboriginal mythologies of the Milky Way. By weaving dance with video installations, spoken word, sculptures and a surreal environment, “The Great Mystery” emerged as a theatrical experience unlike anything Saskatoon has ever seen. Special thanks to the entire cast and crew, and to the sponsors and program advertisers, including Canada Council for the Arts, Saskatchewan Arts Board, Paved Arts, White Birch Ballet, Mendel Art Gallery, Rosebud Burlesque Club, Unreal City, Sephira Healing and Free Flow Dance Centre. And one last thank you to everyone at Burning Man; this project was inspired by all of you. Upcoming Events Free Flow Dance will be co-hosting the Dr. Sketchy's Art Show and Reception Party on November 4th at Positive Passions, 300 3rd Avenue South. Mini sketching sessions will be offered throughout the night, as well as music, dancing, socializing, contests and a cash bar! The door fee is $2 and the event begins at 8pm. The Works In Progress Dance Series Gala of Finished Works will take place at The Refinery, 609 Dufferin Avenue, on Saturday December 10th. Tickets will be $15 at the door, and the show will begin at 8pm. Stay tuned for our list of performers! |
