March 1996Welcome to the first Free Flow News Letter.
Hello! We are the Free Flow Dance Company. The Dance company has recently relocated from Kitchener Ontario to Toronto. We are now located at 50 Noble Street ( at Queen W. and Brock )
Our new phone number is 416-539-0869.
Current members include:
Jackie Latendresse - Choreographer and Artistic Director
Kasia Kord, Lucy Rupert, Trina Spiller, Rebecca Carney - performing company
THE MOVE
In December 1996 Jackie and Trina were busy searching out prospective
live / work studios in the down town Toronto area. Despite the cold
weather and Christmas holidays their hard work was rewarded when
they found the Noble St. studio. Lucy had recently moved to Toronto
and was just starting to settle in. After a month or two of Chaos
the new Free Flow Studio began to look and feel like home.
In January a huge fund-raiser party was held so that we could buy a
fridge. Well we got the Fridge and would like to say thank you to all
of you from both Kitchener and Toronto who helped us get this place going!
Classes began somewhat regularly in the middle of January and students
are currently into their second session of dance.
We now have the ballet bars up and a few small mirrors along with an
entire wall of photos from our previous season by Michel La Flamme.
THE CLASSES
Currently the Studio offers classes to adults students. Classes include
Stretch and Strength, Ballet, Modern, Creative combo, beginner ballet,
Medieval Dance for couples, Private lessons and semiprivate lessons in
Ballet, Tap, Modern,
Special workshops are always in progress such as relaxation classes or
creative movement classes.
For Rent! Studio space that you can afford!
Free Flow rents space to solo choreographers and small dance and theatre
groups for rehearsals. The fee is $10.00 first hour and $5.00 each
additional hour.
For class or rental info please call Jackie at 539-0869.
WHAT’S ON THE GO FOR FREE FLOW?
We are currently in rehearsal three days a week for our upcoming summer
season. Works for the new season include several new pieces of choreography.
- Lotus:
- This work is what we call a Zen water dance. Inspired by the
intoxicating voice of Lisa Gerrard this dance is a combination of
minimalist and trance like movement. The water images parallel
the Zen processes of enlightenment.
- Mythological Requiem:
- Selections from Mozart’s famous requiem are matched with dance
that brings to life mythological stories and creatures. The
choreography is a mixture of traditional ballet and modern dance
techniques.
- Walking after Midnight:
- Dancers groove to the crooning of Patsy Cline in a light
hearted spoof about Country Line Dancing!
- Laughing:
- This dance work is a strange tribute to minimalist
choreographer Yvonne Rainer and offers a creative look at the
bizarreness of human nature. Theatrical in nature this piece
offers a subtle sense of humour in conjunction with the interesting
sounds of Meredith Monk and John Cage.
- Harridan Plexus:
- Yes! We are remounting this work due to popular demand. It
has been pared down to suit four dancers instead of five and a
couple of things have been removed and reworked. This hard core
industrial piece had a great quote written about it by ID magazine.
Quote: The Plexus core looked like mutant outer-space Barbies from
the naughty back pages of the Intergalactic Sears Catalogue.
We LOVE this quote! If you have any interesting quotes you would like
to tell us about any of our works you have seen let us know!

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW!
We have a new member of our company! Rebecca Carney has been asked to join
us for our new season of work. Rebecca has worked with Jackie in Kitchener
where she danced in the infamous "Smoking" piece. Rebecca is not trained
in dance but rather in Drama. She attended college where she studied acting
and technical theatre. She has always loved to be on the stage and now
finds herself avidly involved in the dance scene. We all want to say
"WELCOME" to Rebecca! Look forward to seeing her in our new works!
BIO TIME
Jackie Latendresse is the founder and artistic director of the Free Flow
Dance Company. She first began the group in 1995 in Kitchener Ontario.
Latendresse is a graduate of the University of Waterloo when she obtained
an H.B. A. in Dance and a minor in Fine Arts. She has been working as an
independent choreographer for almost seven years and has produced many
full length evenings of her own original style of modern dance. Jackie
is a driven person who knows what she wants and goes for it. She prides
herself in bringing modern and experimental dance to the general public.
She is best known for her original approach to dance using some minimalism,
theatricality and quirky dance moves. Her subject matter often includes
feminist perspectives and social commentary.
Kasia Kord is one of the co. dancers she is currently awaiting her
convocation for her degree in Religious Studies at the University of
Waterloo. She commutes to Toronto for rehearsals and will be making
the move there in the Fall when she will begin her second degree in
Massage Therapy.
Lucy Rupert is a grad of the U of Waterloo where she completed a joint
honours degree in Dance and Music. She continues both professionally
and strives to become an established solo dance artist and performer.
She is currently residing in Toronto.
Trina Spiller also a U of W graduate (Sciences) joined Free Flow at it’s
beginning. She only recently began to study dance and has thrown herself
into it full force. She is currently living at the studio with Jackie.
Trina is working a lot and taking many dance classes in Toronto.
Rebecca Carney a graduate of Humber College in Drama has only recently
joined our group. She is very busy at her dance training with Latendresse
and her job she hardly has any time for anything else. But that’s okay she
loves it! and we’re glad to have her with us.
THE WAY WE RUN
Free Flow is a self supported organization. Jackie runs almost all of the
business aspects as well as does the show choreography and production. The
dancers donate their time for rehearsals which may run up to 12 hours or
more per week in a busy season. The dancers attend classes at Free Flow
but also further their training at several other dance studios.
We rely on you our audience members and students to help keep our company
going. Free Flow could use any time or funding that you may be able to
offer. We are always on the lookout for volunteers, new students and patrons.
Please tell a friend about us or pass this newsletter on as we also rely on
word of mouth to help expand our classes and audience range.
Would you like to receive a regular newsletter?
You will receive a newsletter approximately every three months for the
low low price of $10.00/yr. This fee is to help us to cover the cost
of printing and mailing. You will be kept up to date on the company
members and it’s upcoming events. This is a great way to support the
arts and it’s independent artists. Check payable to Jackie Latendresse.
Would you like to make a monetary donation or donate used
articles that we may need?
Cash donations are needed to help us afford to travel to our performance
destinations and to buy new costumes as the old ones are constantly
wearing thin among many other things such as administration and advertising
costs. Your donation will be recognised in the newsletter. You can sponsor
a dancer for $20.00 (please select a dancer). You can sponsor a dance piece
for $50.00 ( call for information about shows in your area). You can sponsor
a performance for $100.00 (call for information). We are looking for a number
of used or new articles (see Needful Things List). Check payable to
Jackie Latendresse.
